How Can You Tell if Your Website Is Costing You Enquiries?

One of the most common things I hear from small business owners and client is "My website looks fine, but I'm not getting many enquiries."

The interesting thing is that a website doesn't need to look outdated to be underperforming.

In fact, some of the websites that struggle most are often visually appealing. They have beautiful imagery, a modern design and all the right pages. On the surface, everything looks fine but when you look a little closer, there are often small issues creating friction throughout the experience.

The challenge is that most business owners don't spend their days looking at websites. They're busy running their business. So it's often difficult to identify whether a website problem exists at all.

While every business is different, there are a few common signs that your website may be costing you potential enquiries.

You're Getting Visitors But Nobody Is Getting in Touch

One of the biggest misconceptions about websites is that no enquiries automatically means no traffic.

Sometimes people are visiting your website, they’re reading your content, checking out your services and spending time on your site but they’re leaving without taking the next step.

This is a conversion problem rather than a traffic problem.

If visitors aren't sure what to do next, can't easily find your contact information or don't feel confident enough to enquire, they'll simply leave.

Not because they aren't interested but that your website hasn’t helped them make a decision.

Your Website Assumes Visitors Already Understand What You Do

As business owners, we're often so close to our own business that we forget what it's like to see it for the first time.

What feels obvious to us can be surprisingly unclear to a new visitor.

If someone lands on your website, can they immediately understand:

  • what you do

  • who you help

  • where you're located

  • and how to work with you?

If not, there's a good chance potential clients are leaving with unanswered questions which is where the lost enquiries come from.

You're Relying on Design Alone

A beautiful website can absolutely help create a strong first impression.

But design alone doesn't convert visitors.

The websites that perform well usually combine good design with:

  • clear messaging

  • trust-building content

  • simple navigation

  • strong calls to action

A website should guide visitors through a journey not just simply look pretty.

Your Mobile Experience Isn't Working

Most small business owners know their website needs to work on mobile.

What they don't always realise is how differently people behave on mobile compared to desktop.

Visitors are often:

  • distracted

  • multitasking

  • scrolling quickly

If important information is difficult to find or buttons are hard to use, people leave fast.

A website can look fantastic on desktop while quietly frustrating visitors on mobile.

You're Not Building Trust Quickly Enough

Trust plays a huge role in whether someone decides to enquire.

Before getting in touch, people are often looking for reassurance.

They want to know:

  • who they're working with

  • whether you've helped similar clients

  • what your work looks like

  • and whether your business feels credible

Simple elements such as testimonials, portfolio examples, professional imagery and a clear About page can make a significant difference.

Sometimes Small Changes Make a Big Difference

If your website isn't generating the enquiries you'd hoped for, it doesn't necessarily mean you need a completely new website.

Sometimes improving the content, structure, navigation or user experience can have a bigger impact than a full redesign.

The first step is understanding where potential clients might be dropping off and identifying what's creating friction along the way.

Because a website doesn't need to be perfect.

It just needs to make it easy for the right people to trust your business and take the next step.
