How to Choose a Website Designer in Adelaide
Choosing a website designer can feel surprisingly difficult - almost as tricky as finding the right tradie!
A quick Google search for a website designer in Adelaide brings up freelancers, agencies, developers, DIY platforms and businesses offering everything from a basic website build to branding, SEO and ongoing marketing.
So how do you know who is actually right for your business?
I've been designing websites for small businesses for six years and working with Australian small businesses for more than 14 years. In that time, I've seen that the right fit isn't necessarily the biggest agency, the cheapest quote or even the designer sitting closest to you.
It's about finding someone who understands your business, has the right experience and can create a website that works for you after launch, not just one that looks good on day one.
When choosing a website designer in Adelaide, look for someone who:
✓ Has a portfolio of real, recent work
✓ Understands small business, not just website design
✓ Can explain which platform suits your business and why
✓ Considers user experience as well as aesthetics
✓ Builds SEO foundations into the website
✓ Designs properly for mobile
✓ Is clear about what's included in the price
✓ Gives you ownership and access to your website
✓ Has genuine client reviews and testimonials
✓ Creates a website you'll actually be able to manage
Start With Their Portfolio
This is probably the first place I'd look. A good portfolio should show you more than whether you like a designer's personal style. Look at the variety of businesses they've worked with and whether every website feels identical.
A website for an optometrist has a very different job from a website for a wedding celebrant, architect or disability support provider.
For example, when I designed the website for Salisbury Optometrist, credibility, clear healthcare information and making services easy to find were particularly important.
For an Adelaide celebrant such as Clare the Celebrant, personality and trust play a much bigger role. Someone choosing a celebrant wants to get a feel for the person behind the business before they enquire.
The visual style changes, but the thinking behind the website should always come back to the business and its customers.
Look Beyond How Pretty the Websites Are
Good website design isn't just about making something beautiful.
Ask yourself:
✓ Can I immediately understand what the business does?
✓ Is it easy to find the important information?
✓ Is there an obvious next step?
✓ Does the website feel credible?
✓ Does it work properly on mobile?
✓ Does the content feel like the actual business?
A beautifully designed website can still be frustrating to use.
When I'm working on a website, I'm constantly thinking about what a potential customer needs to know next. That affects everything from navigation and page structure to calls to action, content placement and mobile design.
Choose Someone Who Understands Small Business
There is a difference between knowing how to design a website and understanding what it's like to run a small business.
Small business websites often need to do a lot.
They need to explain what you offer, establish credibility, answer questions, showcase your work and encourage someone to take the next step, often without an enormous marketing budget sitting behind them.
Having spent more than 14 years running businesses and working with Australian small business owners, I know a website also needs to be realistic to maintain.
You shouldn't need to contact a developer every time you want to change a sentence, add a photo or publish a blog post.
Ask Which Website Platform They Recommend
Not every business needs the same platform and there are a few to choose from.
I specialise in Squarespace and Wix because both can be excellent choices for service-based small businesses, but I don't believe every client automatically belongs on the same one.
Your designer should be able to explain why they're recommending a particular platform.
Consider things such as:
✓ What functionality you need
✓ How often you'll update the website
✓ Whether you want to blog
✓ Booking or enquiry requirements
✓ E-commerce needs
✓ Integrations with other systems
✓ How comfortable you are managing technology
✓ How the website may need to grow
The platform should suit the business, rather than the business being forced to fit the designer's preferred platform.
Make Sure SEO Isn't an Afterthought
A website doesn't automatically rank on Google simply because it has been professionally designed.
But your designer should understand the foundations that give search engines a clear website to crawl and understand.
That can include:
✓ Logical site structure
✓ Clear page headings
✓ Page titles and meta descriptions
✓ Mobile usability
✓ Image optimisation
✓ Internal linking
✓ Search-friendly URLs
✓ Redirects when existing URLs change
✓ Google Search Console setup
If you're redesigning an existing website, this becomes particularly important. Removing old pages or changing URLs without considering redirects can create unnecessary problems.
SEO is an ongoing process, but it makes sense to build the foundations properly from the beginning.
Look for Genuine Local Experience
If you're specifically looking for an Adelaide website designer, there's nothing wrong with wanting someone who understands the local market.
But I'd look for evidence, rather than simply counting how many times the word Adelaide appears on their website.
I've worked with businesses across Adelaide and South Australia in industries ranging from healthcare and disability services to weddings, architecture, trades, wellness and professional services.
Projects such as Salisbury Optometrist, Mind Over Matter Disability Support and Clare the Celebrant all needed completely different websites, despite being South Australian businesses.
Real projects give you a much better indication of someone's local experience than a long list of Adelaide suburb names on a page.
Do You Actually Need Your Website Designer to Be Local?
Not necessarily.
I'm based in the Adelaide Hills, but I work with clients throughout Australia and overseas. Most website projects can be managed very easily online through video calls, email and shared project tools.
There can certainly be benefits to working with someone local. They may understand your market, your customers and the places you serve.
But I'd choose the designer who is the best fit for your business rather than limiting yourself to someone within a particular radius.
Experience, communication, design style and understanding your business are usually much more important than whether you can meet for coffee.
Ask What Happens After the Website Launches
This is something that's easy to forget when you're excited about a new website.
Ask:
✓ Will I know how to update it?
✓ Will I have full access?
✓ Who owns the website and accounts?
✓ What happens if I need help later?
✓ Can the designer make future updates?
✓ Is ongoing maintenance required?
One of the reasons I work primarily with Wix and Squarespace is that clients can manage their own websites after launch if they want to.
And if you'd rather not touch it, you can still get help with updates later.
Understand Exactly What's Included in the Quote
Website quotes can be difficult to compare because two designers may be offering very different things.
Before choosing purely on price, look at what's actually included.
Does the quote include:
✓ Strategy or planning
✓ Custom website design
✓ Number of pages
✓ Mobile optimisation
✓ SEO foundations
✓ Image optimisation
✓ Forms and integrations
✓ Domain connection
✓ Revisions
✓ Support after launch
✓ Copywriting or copy guidance
A cheaper quote isn't necessarily poor value and a more expensive quote isn't automatically better.
You need to understand what you're actually buying.
Pay Attention to Communication
Your website designer is going to learn quite a lot about your business.
You'll be sharing your goals, customers, services, ideas and sometimes the things that aren't working particularly well.
You need to feel comfortable asking questions.
Good communication doesn't mean someone needs to be available every minute of the day. It means the process is clear, you know what happens next and you feel comfortable speaking up if something doesn't feel right.
I work directly with my clients from the initial conversation through to launch. There's no account manager passing your ideas onto someone else.
For small businesses, I think that direct relationship can make the whole process much easier.
Read the Reviews, But Read Them Properly
Don't just look at the star rating. Read what clients actually say.
Do they talk about communication? Understanding the brief? Making the process easy? The finished website? Support?
Those details can tell you far more about what working with the designer is actually like.
It's also worth looking for reviews from businesses similar to yours.
Trust Matters More Than Ever
It's becoming incredibly easy to generate polished-looking website copy, stock imagery and even entire websites using AI.
That makes genuine evidence more important, not less so look for information about the person about the business.
You should be able to get a sense of who you're trusting with your business and see evidence that they've actually done the work they're talking about.
For me, credibility isn't about trying to sound like the biggest website agency in Adelaide. It's about showing the work I've done, explaining how I work and being clear about what I can help with.
Choosing the Right Adelaide Website Designer
There's no single website designer who will be right for every Adelaide business.
Some businesses need a large agency and a completely custom build. Others need an experienced independent designer who can guide them through the process without making it unnecessarily complicated.
Take the time to look through portfolios, read reviews, understand what's included and have a conversation before deciding.
The right designer should make you feel more confident about your website, not more overwhelmed by it.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a website designer cost in Adelaide?
Website design prices vary considerably depending on the size of the website, functionality, level of customisation and what's included in the project.
A straightforward service-based business website will generally cost less than a large e-commerce, membership or highly customised website.
Rather than comparing quotes on price alone, look carefully at what's included and whether the proposed website actually suits what your business needs.
Is it better to use an Adelaide website designer?
Not necessarily, although there can be benefits to working with someone who understands Adelaide and the South Australian business landscape.
Most website projects can be managed completely online, so I'd prioritise experience, communication, portfolio and fit over distance alone.
Should I choose Wix or Squarespace for my small business website?
Both can be excellent platforms for small businesses.
The right choice depends on your website's functionality, how you want to manage it, your design requirements and how the business may grow.
I design on both Wix and Squarespace and recommend the platform based on the project rather than using the same system for every client.
Will a website designer help with SEO?
This varies between designers, so it's worth asking.
Website design and SEO aren't the same service, but a professionally designed website should ideally have sound SEO foundations including clear structure, page titles, meta descriptions, mobile usability, optimised images and logical internal linking.
No website designer can guarantee you a particular Google ranking.
Can an existing website be redesigned?
Absolutely.
You don't always need to start from scratch or move to a new platform. If your business has evolved but your website hasn't kept up, a thoughtful redesign can improve the structure, content, user experience and visual presentation while retaining what's already working.
How long does it take to design a small business website?
It depends on the size and complexity of the project and how prepared the content is.
For many small business websites, the process can take a few weeks, although larger or more complex projects may take longer.
