We all know that AI is changing the way we do just about everything online, and website design is no exception.
If you've experimented with Claude, you might have wondered: if AI can generate a website, do I still need Squarespace, Wix or even a website designer?
Technically, AI can generate the code for a website.
But that doesn't necessarily mean it can create a good business website.
There's a fairly big difference between producing something that looks like a website and creating an online presence that's easy to manage, builds trust, supports your SEO and actually helps turn visitors into customers.
Your website also needs somewhere to live. It needs to be secure, easy to update and built around real business goals. You may need enquiry forms, analytics, bookings, a blog, ecommerce, email marketing or integrations with other tools.
And perhaps most importantly, as we're exposed to more AI-generated content online, people are becoming increasingly aware of content that feels generic, impersonal or simply doesn't sound human.
So, is Claude really an alternative to Squarespace or Wix for a small business?

Claude can generate website code, but for most small businesses I'd still recommend an established platform such as Squarespace or Wix.
✓ Choose Claude if you're technically confident, comfortable managing code and hosting, and understand what will be required to maintain the website afterwards.
✓ Choose Squarespace if you want a polished, easy-to-manage website with your essential website tools within one established platform.
✓ Choose Wix if you want greater design flexibility alongside a broad range of built-in business features.
✓ Choose a professional website designer if you want someone to consider the strategy, design, SEO, user experience and, importantly, the humans who will actually use your website.
The key difference? Claude can generate the building blocks of a website. Squarespace and Wix give you an established platform for actually running one.
Can Claude Actually Build a Website?
Technically, yes.
Claude can generate HTML, CSS and JavaScript and help with layouts, functionality and troubleshooting code.
But there's an important distinction here.
Generating code isn't the same thing as designing an effective business website.
A website isn't successful simply because the pages load and everything looks reasonably polished.
A good business website needs to understand who it's talking to, what that person needs, what questions they're likely to have, what might stop them from enquiring and what will make them trust the business enough to take the next step.
Those decisions are much harder to generate from a prompt.
And once Claude has generated the website, you still need to decide what happens next.
How Does Building a Website With Claude Work?
When you create a website using Claude, you're essentially using AI to help generate the code behind the site.
That can give you plenty of freedom, but it can also shift responsibilities onto you that platforms such as Squarespace and Wix normally take care of.
Once you've generated your website, you need to think about questions such as:
✓ Where will it be hosted?
✓ How will you connect your domain?
✓ How will security be managed?
✓ Where will your enquiry forms go?
✓ How will you track analytics?
✓ How will you update your content?
✓ What happens when something breaks?
✓ How will you add new functionality later?
✓ What happens when the person who created it no longer remembers how everything works?
For someone with development experience, those questions may not be particularly daunting.
For the average small business owner who simply wants a website that brings in enquiries while they get on with running their business, it's potentially a lot of unnecessary complexity.

Claude and Squarespace aren't really direct competitors because they're fundamentally different products.
Claude is an AI assistant that can generate and work with code.
Squarespace is an established website platform.
When you build your business website with Squarespace, you're not simply getting a website editor. You're getting much of the infrastructure required to keep the website online and manage it.
Hosting is handled for you. You have visual editing tools, analytics, blogging functionality, forms, ecommerce options, SEO settings and integrations available within the platform.
For many small businesses, one of the biggest advantages is simply being able to log in and change something yourself.

You can make those changes visually without having to regenerate or edit code.

Wix offers many of the same advantages, with a particularly broad range of built-in business functionality.
It's a managed website platform with hosting, security and visual editing alongside tools and integrations for things such as bookings, events, ecommerce, memberships and online programs.
For small businesses, that can be incredibly useful.
Instead of creating or connecting a new technical solution every time your business needs something, much of the functionality already exists within the ecosystem.
Wix and Squarespace are also incorporating AI into their own platforms.
So this isn't necessarily a choice between embracing AI and avoiding it.
It's about using AI where it's genuinely useful, while still having a reliable platform underneath your business website.
Where Squarespace and Wix Still Have the Advantage
For me, this is where the real conversation starts.
The question isn't:
Can Claude generate a website?
Yes, it can.
The better question is:
Would I want to run my business website this way for the next five years?
That's where established website platforms still have significant advantages for many small businesses.

Squarespace and Wix are designed so business owners can manage their own content. You shouldn't need to understand code simply to change your opening hours or add a new team member.

Your website needs somewhere to live. With Squarespace and Wix, hosting is built into the platform rather than something you need to organise separately.
✓ Security and maintenance
Much of the technical infrastructure and security is handled by the platform.
✓ Forms and enquiries
You can create forms, manage submissions and connect them to other business tools without developing the functionality from scratch.
✓ SEO controls
Both platforms provide access to important SEO settings including page titles, meta descriptions, URLs, redirects and image alt text.
✓ Analytics
You can see how people are finding and using your website without creating your own analytics system.
✓ Blogging
Publishing and managing ongoing content just like what you’re reading now is straightforward, which is particularly useful if blogging forms part of your SEO strategy.
✓ Business functionality
Bookings, ecommerce, memberships, events, email marketing and other functionality can be added as your business evolves.
And Then There's Trust
This is the part I think is going to become increasingly important.
We are all being exposed to more AI-generated content.

✓ AI websites
And people are starting to recognise it.
There's often a certain sameness to content that's been generated without enough human input. The words can sound polished without really saying anything. Images can look technically perfect while somehow feeling slightly off. Websites can look professional at first glance but lack the little details that make you believe there's a real business behind them.
For a small business, trust is everything.
Your potential customer wants to know:

✓ Do they understand businesses like mine?
✓ Have they done this before?

That's why things such as genuine photographs, detailed About pages, case studies, reviews, credentials, useful original content and a clear point of view matter so much.
Ironically, I think the more AI content we see online, the more valuable human signals are going to become.
Your website shouldn't just prove that your business exists.
It should give people a reason to trust it.
It's Not Really AI vs Squarespace or Wix
I don't think the future of website design is:
AI or website builders.
It's much more likely to be:
AI used intelligently alongside established website platforms and human expertise.
AI can be genuinely useful and I use it in my own business.
It can help with research, brainstorming, organising ideas, troubleshooting and speeding up repetitive tasks.
But there's a difference between using AI as a tool and handing your entire online presence over to it.
For me, the question isn't whether businesses should use AI.
It's:
Where can AI make things easier without making your business less human, less trustworthy or harder to manage?
Are AI-Built Websites Good for Small Businesses?
They can be.
An AI-assisted custom website might make sense if you have unusual functionality requirements, want complete control over your code or have the technical skills and development support required to manage it properly.
But that's not necessarily what most small businesses need.
Most of the businesses I work with want a website that:
✓ Looks professional
✓ Reflects their actual brand
✓ Feels genuine
✓ Works beautifully on mobile
✓ Can be found through search
✓ Builds trust
✓ Generates enquiries
✓ Is easy to update
✓ Doesn't become another technical job to manage
For those businesses, Squarespace and Wix remain very strong options.
What About SEO on an AI-Built Website?
AI can help implement SEO elements, but good SEO isn't simply a matter of generating some keywords and adding title tags.
You still need to understand what your potential customers are searching for and why they're searching for it.
You need useful content, clear website architecture, internal linking, strong user experience, technical foundations and authority around your subject.
Increasingly, you also need to demonstrate who is behind the information.
That's particularly relevant as traditional search and AI-powered search continue to evolve.
Real expertise, original insight, genuine client work, clear business information and consistent information about who you are and what you do all help establish credibility.
The platform alone won't make a website rank.
And neither will AI.
You still need a strategy behind it.
What Happens After Your AI Website Is Built?
This is the question I'd encourage every small business owner to ask before choosing any website solution.
Imagine the website has been live for six months.
✓ You introduce a new service
✓ Your prices change
✓ You have new photographs
✓ You want to publish an article
✓ You want to improve your SEO
✓ Your enquiry form needs changing
✓ You decide to start taking bookings online
How easy is it for you to make those changes?
The launch isn't the end of your website project.
Your website should evolve alongside your business.
That's why I place so much importance on choosing a platform you can confidently manage after your website designer hands it over.
What About Hiring a Website Designer When AI Can Generate Websites?
This is probably the elephant in the room.
Do you still need a website designer if AI can generate pages and code?
It depends what you're actually paying the designer for.
If website design were simply putting text and pictures onto a page, AI would certainly make a convincing argument for doing it yourself.
But good website design involves much more than assembling a page.
When I design a website, I'm thinking about:
✓ What information your customer needs first
✓ How they'll move through the website
✓ What might confuse them
✓ What builds trust
✓ Where calls to action should appear
✓ What content belongs on each page
✓ How the website works on mobile
✓ How search engines will understand it
✓ How the design reflects the actual business
✓ What will encourage someone to enquire
✓ How you'll manage the website once I'm gone
AI can assist with parts of that process.
But someone still needs to understand the business and make the strategic decisions.
So, Should You Choose Claude, Squarespace or Wix?
There isn't one right answer for every business.
If you're technically confident, enjoy experimenting and are comfortable managing the infrastructure behind a custom website, using Claude as part of that development process may suit you.
If you want a polished website that's relatively straightforward to manage, Squarespace may be the better fit.
If you want more flexibility and extensive built-in business functionality, Wix may suit you better.
For most of the small businesses I work with, I'd still recommend Squarespace or Wix.
Not because AI can't generate a website but I'd choose an established platform because once the novelty of generating your website has worn off, you still have a business to run.
And I'd rather see you spending your time running that business than trying to work out why a piece of generated code has suddenly stopped behaving itself.
